What is a Bulging Disc?

To understand a bulging disc, you must first understand normal disc anatomy. In general, a disc is shock absorber between your vertebrae that is anatomically much like a jelly-filled doughnut.
If the disc is injured and bulges, then the jelly-like nucleus is displaced to the outer doughnut rim where it is contained by the annulus. This bulging disc either statically or dynamically impinges on the adjacent neural elements and may cause pain.
