What is a Disc Tear?
A disc tear is a crack in the doughnut-like annulus of the disc. The disc tear is an irritant to nociceptive nerve fiber endings within the annulus and is a structural cause of pain. The disc tear may progress and allow the jelly-like nucleus to leak out as another source of either chemical or neurocompressive mediated pain.
