What is a Herniated Disc?

To understand a herniated disc, you must first understand normal disc anatomy. In general, a disc is a shock absorber between your vertebrae that is anatomically much like a jelly-filled doughnut.

If the disc is injured and herniates, then the jelly-like nucleus has slipped thru the outer doughnut rim where it is not contained by the annulus. This herniated disc either statically or dynamically impinges on the adjacent neural elements and may cause pain.
